On Monday, July 13th I drove to Switzerland.
There, I visited a valley in the "Berner Oberland". I arrived at late afternoon.
The weather forecast was good to very good for the whole week, and Monday has been the first good reptile day after a cool and rainy period.
So I was confident to have 3 nice days there!
Tuesday morning I went the valley upstream.
Although it was still very cloudy with only a few blue spots, the first aspviper male was outside
.... and a slow worm was crawling through the wet grass
the weather got better from hour to hour
While climbing around, some aspvipers disappeared below large rocks very quick.
About 1 hour after getting the first, we saw an aspviper female between some rocks.
after lunch we walked again on the hillsides
In the valley you may find grey to brick red (unfortunately one very nice male run below a very large rock), as well as black asp vipers. Some of the black ones have a bright red chin
Vipera aspis "atra" - in situ blog:
While making the pictures of the black - red chinned - female, I saw another black asp only 2 meters away, just coming out into the sun.
These aspis places are between 1´300 and 1´400 metres a.s.l.
At altitudes of 1´500 and more metres, Vipera berus is living.
We saw a young individual, but couldn´t make one picture.
So we decided to come back the next morning and start at the berus place, before it gets to warm.
...... but the next morning .......
looked like this.
And no chance to change within the next two days.
So I drove back to Austria.
