Yesterday I had some business in the south of Austria.
So I went the 220 kilometers down early in the morning, because I wanted to combine my business with searching for herps.
I arrived in Carinthia at a place I know, Vipera ammodytes occurs, at about 8:30 in the morning.
Temperatures already have been more than 30°C.
To hot for snakes!
But I walked around and found some Podarcis muralis.
Here some in situ pics of them.
During the hottest time of the day I was in town and came back around 4:00 p.m.
I know, Vipera ammodytes change their places during summer into forests, where it gets not so hot.
I checked this way through the forest.
The way was overgrown by ferns, about 1 meter and more tall. But with sunny spots on the ground (on dry fern leafes).
In this area also Zamenis longissimus occurs, but again, couldnt see any snake.
Lacerta viridis was outside, but still in the shade!
At about 6:00 p.m. I saw the first Lacerta viridis out in the late sun.
On some rocks beside a creek, there have been many fresh hatched Podarcis muralis.
At 6:30 p.m. I had to leave for my business.
Although no snakes, a nice day in southern Austria!
