In the NL, Alytes breeds on temporary waters like in the town were I live and also on permanent waters elswhere in the area. Bombina almost never breeds on permanent waters. They breed on shallow ponds with no or little vegetation. We dig almost every year new shallow ponds for them and some of the smaller ponds are cleamed. One of the grooves where they live have pig living there to keep the ponds open and act against vegetation groth. Tadpoles thrive in the mud...
In the areas where both leave you can find larvae of both of shallow ponds but on bigger pounds you only see alytes.

This is one of the pools where I found the variegata and calamita tadpoles.
There are five pools, in "normal" years they have water year around this year was a Little bit different, two of them dried out, but of course they are full now.
