Bavaria, spring 2017

Postby Laura Bok » Wed Jun 21, 2017 7:30 pm

Hello everybody,

after Paul posted his recent thread (viewtopic.php?f=10&t=2725), which I enjoyed very much, I thought I do something similar and share some pictures from weekend trips near my hometown Munich.
Taken together, these add up to a nice compilation of findings - ze Germans are going strong

The "Isarauen" south of Munich are a very important area for both rare plants and animals, and always good for interesting encounters and observations.

My first German Aesculapian Snake (Zamenis longissimus), obviously found at one of the two known locations in Eastern Bavaria

Thanks for having a look!
Cheers,

The black Natrix is gorgeous, do you find there both black and "regular" Natrix (and in which ratio, approx.)?

Definitely both black and regular ones. Estimating a ratio is hard for me though, as I do not visit as regularly as necessary to make a reliable statement about that. However, I can say that the proportion of melanistic to regular animals must be rather high. On several days, I found 100% black snakes, while I never had a day where I only found regular ones. I also think that a high proportion of melanistic animals is a common observation for Bavarian populations, and this applies both to Natrix natrix as well as to Vipera berus.
