Croatia

Postby Magnus Öhrn » Sat Dec 14, 2013 8:20 pm

Hello!
I´m planning to do a fieldtrip to Croatia in early May. I´m staying in Dubrovnik where I plan to search for Dalmatolacerta oxycephala around the city wall. I`m also interested to see more herps, especially Vipera ammodytes. What species can I expect to see around Dubrovnik? Any tip of locations particulary good for herping? I`m thankfull for every tip I can get.
Regards

D. oxycephala is rather easy to find. Another popular herptiles there are turtles, green frogs, grass snakes, geckos, wall lizards and green lizards.

Scheltopusik and Testudo are very common during this time of the year.

Thanks for some answers! I`m looking forward to the trip, which will be my first real fieldtrip as a herper. I´ll post some photos here to show my result.

If you go in the North (Makarska, Split) you may be able to easely find Hierophis gemonensis (but I think it could also be easy near Dubrovnik).
I just heard you can find Zamenis situla near Omiš. There's a nice river there and it's a good place to see Emys orbicularis.
I didn't go to Dubrovnik but I'll be very interested in what you'll see because I'm planning to go there (one day...).

You can find a lot of herps around Dubrovnik. You don't even have to go so far from the city. The question is, what group do you like more, snakes, lizards, frogs, or entire herpetofauna?

Since you've mentioned Vipera ammodytes, I'm guessing you like snakes. Besides V.ammodytes, there can be found Elaphe quatuorlineata, Zamenis longissimus, Zamenis situla, Coronella austriaca, Malpolon insignitus, Telescopus fallax, Hierophis gemonensis, Platyceps najadum, and both Natrix natrix and tessellata. If you make a one-day trip to Lastovo island, you can see Dolichophis caspius (it's the only snake on the island).

In the city itself you can see the endemic subspecies of Podarcis siculus.

You can contact me on my e-mail for further info.
