Naxos

Postby Peter Oefinger » Mon Jan 04, 2016 3:17 pm

Happy new year, everybody!
I'm thinking about a 2016 trip to Naxos. Although this island is home to a nice number of species, I hardly found any herping info about this place. If anyone knows more about the area, I would be glad about some info / PM.

Best regards
Peter

Matt Wilson was there last year. https://plus.google.com/photos/11713998 ... erid=gplp0

I was there myself in my early, more ignorant days in 2000. Only (easily) saw erhardii and stellio, as far as I remember (but of course probably also kotschyi en turcicus at least).

My girlfriend also chose this island to our holiday destination for 2016  So informations are also from my side very welcome

I also looked at Matt´s report, but if I remember right he didn´t write exactly what he found on the different islands in hiy cyclade tour, right ? But I hope I´m right when I expect this cool little dwarf ammodytes on Naxos !? :D

Kind regards and a happy new year :!:

Nice shots, Mario.

The British gentleman told me he didn't go herping on Naxos but focused on other Islands...

Yes, and there's an Italian paper about snakes - but also not very instructive.
So it will be a trip to terra incognita ;)

Peter, you will not need precise locations for Naxos in my opinion. All of my trips to these islands have been in high summer and if I recall you will be there in spring which will be so much better. I didn't have locations on any of the islands and I'm sure you will find everything without too much effort.
But as I suggested, Naxos and then probably Mykonos were my least favourite of all the islands in the Cyclades, too big (Naxos) and too busy (Mykonos). I'd recommend some days there and then get to a tiny island with only 50 inhabitants for some days :-)

The way I remember it, the interior was pleasantly calm, though. The hike to the top of Mt Zas is rather nice and gives a cool view on the surrounding islands.

Agreed: In spring the Situation is completely different than in summer...
