Rana sp. - ID possible?

Postby Heiko Wehner » Mon Jul 09, 2012 7:18 pm

Hello,

on my trip to the Black Forest I not only found V. berus, but also some other animals.

This frog makes me wonder: could it be a Rana dalmatina?
Bodylength was around 3cm, the little fellow sat next to some high grass. In his back a piece of forest, in his front a moor.

I have no photo from above, but his back was uniform brown.

Thanks in advance!

For me it's defenitely R. temporaria (small eardrum, spotted throat, relatively round snout).

Thanks for your opinion. The spotted throat made me wonder the most. I'm afraid I still have long way to go when it comes to IDing frogs. Somehow they give me a hard time :)

Hi there,

next specimen, same question

This time the throat isn't spotted, and to me, the snout looks less round. Maybe that's just wishful thinking though...

Nice pictures, but it is still R. temporaria. The snout is too short, the eardrum too small and too far away from the eye, the hind legs are not long enough for R. dalmatina.

Hmph... I nearly thought so. The longer I looked at it, the rounder the snout got
Guess it'll become easier to distinguish as soon as I find my first real dalmatina.

Would have been too nice to be true, hopped right on my boot while I was walking along.

Thanks!
