Would you agree that this is a dilemma: educating people vs. the risk they start taking anti-snake measures as soon as they know snakes are there?

that was our dilemma about balkan adders too, people do not know what they have in their neighborhood and they are living there for hundred years.. some locals told us that they heard for some adders, but they are sure that adders arrived with some stones and rocks from Bosnia 10 or 20 years ago

when they see us at the end of february, or at begginng of march they are always shocked, and they tell us "you wont find any snake till jun" :D and we say them that we will find some grass snakes ;)

If you are catching adders in front of people's noses, around their houses, for months and years, you simply can not
avoid being noticed. Now they knew the snakes were all around, and the question (for us) was what to do about it.
Educating the locals seemed to be the best option.

Having a great network of snake catchers offering free intervention as we have here in Lyon helps them feeling better ! They just think "don't kill it I'm gonna call the snake expert, that's free !!!".
And you go to their place and meet them, that's the best moment to talk to them about what snakes really are. You'll be surprise to learn that some of our interventions were supposed to be catastrophic with someone having a very powerful phobic reaction and turns to a "when is your last public presentation about snakes? I'm interested".
Kinda feel like a great warrior defeating a big army in these cases.

I bet Guy wasn't expecting this when he said hello.

Personally I just wanted to comfort him a bit regarding his wail:
Not had much luck with adders this year though. Failed to find any in all of my regular local haunts
in south Somerset - very disappointing (and worrying) indeed.

But if a wider discussion ensues and develops further (as it has), I guess everyone should welcome it,
including him. It doesn't mean we either forgot about Guy or ignore him.

If (by some accident) one happens to send the same posting two times, how could one delate one of them?
(I mean, by his/her own hand.) Is there a technical possibility?
If only an admin can, please then delete this one, but also tell us how it works.

I see no "X" in my previous messages, but after your last message they started to appear.
Did you change something lately or forgot to tell me something?

Bero, nothing changed - you must have overlooked it ;)
With this, the Hans Dampf account, I cant see it at your postings, but only at "mine"
