Evening all,

Had a few attempts at posting this - hopefully this time it won't crash...

Here's a few shots from a quick 6-day trip to Southern Florida at the end of February:

Is it true that Florida is the capital of pet trade and this is why it hosts so many introduced species of herptiles?

Not sure if it has a higher rate of pet trade than other states but it has a climate that is suitable for a lot of species that are traded, so they just establish populations there easier than elsewhere with similar rates of pet trade.

Because the climate is suitable for many species, they are also kept outdoors in cages. In storms these cages might get destroyed and the individuals can escape. In addition there are rumors that people in pet trade tried to establish populations in the wild to have a free stock at hand. I am not sure, but I also thought that other states (e.g. California) have more restrictive laws about keeping species that might become invasive.

Hi Fred,

Thanks for taking the time to read the report - glad you enjoyed it.
A place definitely worth visiting - there's so much stuff there that even if you miss your main targets you'll still bump into many other interesting creatures!

Cheers
