Where I live in the North of England, helviticus are found in acidic ponds and vulgaris and cristatus in alkaline waters. At one interesting location there is a small island of acidic moorland that was dumped on top of carboniferous limestone in the last ice age (I think it is unique in the UK), ponds on the moorland have helviticus whereas ponds on the surrounding limestone have the other two species, the altitude is 1300-1400 feet asl.

Don't be sad :) Ponds here in Czech republic are still frozen and there is no amphibian activity. I'm the one, who is envy now!

Every time I find a few dead toad females. I suppose, it's not so bad for such a huge amount of toads. But it's not just a toads I also found dead R. temporaria. I've never seen it but i think toad males drowned them too. They are ready to mate with everything a bit like a female toad.

Same goes for Rana temporaria - in Belgium, there's a forest with nearly only 1 pond and no other water in the area, where female fire salamanders drown each year because of overeager grass frog males.

Some pictures of an aquatic toad orgy last year - These were obviously a little more shy than some of yours. I watched them for about an hour and many of the males came up for air - I'm sure there must be a drowned female in the middle...
