Central France (2012)

Postby Guillaume Gomard » Sat Mar 24, 2012 7:28 pm

Hi all,

I open again a post dedicated to the herps from Central France. After some first observations of P.muralis during March, it was the time for me to go for a real herping session. With 20°C and no clouds (but a bit windy), I thought that today could be a good day, but it has gone beyond my expectations with several L.bilineata and many snakes, including young V.aspis and two Z.longissimus (unfortunately, one missed). I just hope that the rest of the season will be like this...Enough words, let the pictures talk for themselves!

Hi all,
today was my day but not so successfull as Guillaume. I live near Geneva as you know, Haute-Savoie. I have near my home a little population of Vipera aspis. I was going at the begenning of march but nothing. Today I saw 4 males, 1 adult and 1 subadult female on about 100 meters.
Most of the snakes had some soil (ground, terre?) under the skin.
They live near a marsh on a band of cane of 5 meters wide and 100 meters long.

Thanks guys.

Nice to see some Aspis from Haute-Savoie. 6 snakes in a single day is really good: Do you also have T°C close to 20°C at your place, Pierre-Yves?

Jürgen, I'm sure your efforts will be rewarded: Are you going to Ticino in a near futur? (please note that "Ticino" was correctly spelt :D )

I did'nt take temperature but it was about 15° this morning at 11AM. I found 5 asps at this place at 3PM in 20 minutes and I came back at this place at 6PM and found the subadult more.

I will never ever go back to Ticino, this is not my place, Ticino don`t like me and I don`t like Ticino anymore!
If I find time I will try my luck at the next one Day trip in the Bernese Alps.
