There is or has been a quite interesting project about this by Mebert et al., also in the french alps, the link is unfortunately only on german and I don't know if there's already something published:

Konrad once showed me his "secret" folder with photos of the Swiss V. berus - the variability is no less astounding.
He added the comment that the guys who defined the species obviously had not seen the full spectrum...

The pattern variability in all these "mountain vipers" is amazing. I remember an astonishing slide collection from the Pyrenees by Gilles Pottier. Fantastic stuff...
