Today I've opened my local herp season :) It was a warm sunny day with +17. All species are still hibernating except Pelophylax ridibundus. I've found several specimen in shallow waters of a small steppe river.

Hi, yesterday I checked green toad habitat in the center of Prague. They already laid their eggs and males were still in the puddles. When I was edditing photos I noticed strange blue dots on some of them. Anybody has an idea what it could be? Fungus, excoration, just coloration?

Here we go again. If I've seen amphibians from the first day of the year, I've made my first snake observations on last sunday (the 28th of january).

Nice! Can you give any details like weather, temperature and (I know no exact localities) the greater area of the observation?

Cheers

Got (reliable) word yesterday of crested newts that have already laid eggs in Belgium. May seem trivial to you southerners, but for around here, this is pretty unusual...

Around Lyon, some newts (Alpine, Smooth and Palmate for what I've seen) are already in the ponds but I didn't see any eggs until then.

Concerning the vipers, that was near Lyon, weather was mostly sunny, with a little bit of wind and like 9°c.

Thank you. Very interesting as it was still quite cold. Makes me think about how strong the sunlight was - probably a lot more than air temperature.
