Yesterday I went out to try to find my first snakes of the year. The sidestory is that most of my friends found their first adders several weeks ago. I live in the inland and most of my friends by the coast and hence spring has arrived late here. However, yesterday the weather was perfect for herping and me and a few friends headed out to my favorite spot! It started out a bit slow but after a while there were grassnakes everywhere! I got some decent pics of two of the less shy ones.
A beautifully coloured adult male Grass snake (Natrix natrix).
The same individual in its habitat. The lake in the background is Vättern, the second largest lake in Sweden.
A very dark, almost completely melanistic adult male Grass snake (N natrix). This little guy was first very shy. And after the shyness had worn off it became inquisitive.
I also found a few adders later in the day. However, at that time the snakes were warmed up and disappeared beneath the rocks before I had a chance to get a decent picture!
